hello everyone!
Time has definitely flown since I lost posted here; since 2015, I got married, and I’m now at Northwest University, in Kirkland, Washington, where I am the chair of the department of communication studies and an assistant professor, as well as the adviser to The Talon, our campus newspaper (and which recently relaunched its print edition!), and The Screech, our campus podcast.
I’m working on a book about the history of media technology/reporting tools in the U.S. and Canada in the 1970s and 1980s for Routledge, due this fall as part of its “Disruptions” series, and my dissertation, a history of the American newsroom of the 1930s through the 1960s, is under review by an academic press (I can send you a sample chapter if you contact me via email or Twitter, at william.mari@northwestu.edu or @willthewordguy).
I remain active in the American Journalism Historians Association, where I help run its social media and am a membership co-chair, as well as the Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s history division, where I am the research chair, and have been membership co-chair. I recently presented at the International Communication Association’s communication history division, and am also engaged in various other academic and professional journalism organizations (and am keeping up my freelance journalism!). Since 2015, I have presented papers at the above, and have been published in Journalism Studies and The Journal of Historical Sociology. For more information about what I’ve been up to with research and teaching, though, please see my resume on my CV page!
I hope to be posting more here, but in the meantime please follow me on Twitter @willthewordguy. Take care!
